Speaker

Walter Bright

Walter Bright started out developing computer games, among which Empire created a new genre and enjoyed wide success. Since then he's had a long career involving compilers; creating them for ABEL, C, C++, Java, Javascript, and D. He is the only person to have written a complete C++ compiler from front end parsing to data flow analysis optimization to back end machine code generation. He has extensive experience in how compilers transform source code into assembler, and how to get the most efficiency out of a compiler.

Walter has written for several publications including the C/C++ Users' Journal and Dr. Dobb's. He is a sought after speaker at venues including SDWest, the Northwest C++ Users' Group, Øredev and the Astoria Seminar, and serves on the advisory board of The C++ Source.

His current focus is on further design, development, and implementation of the D programming language.

Walter holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology.

He has worked on distributed software systems at Amazon.com and on cluster computing projects for aQuantive, Inc., prior to its acquisition by Microsoft, where he continues developing the software. He has written articles for C++ Users Journal and participated in reviewing the manuscripts of Modern C++ Design and Advanced Windows Debugging. He has developed his own C++ visual debugger for Linux, which features an integrated C++ expression interpreter and support for the D programming language. His passion for development tools steered him to write a .NET back-end for the D compiler. Cristian has a BS in Electrical Engineering from University Politehnica Bucharest and serves on the board of directors for the Northwest C++ Users Group. He blogs about his compiler research at the-free-meme.blogspot.com.
